Innovative Research on Transnational Urban Planning: A Collaboration Between Tamkang University and Tokyo Denki University

In today’s rapidly globalizing world, urban planning has become a key factor in influencing community development and the quality of life of residents. To enhance students' professional capabilities and understanding of urban planning from multiple perspectives, Tamkang University's Department of Architecture has collaborated with Tokyo Denki University to launch the "International Joint Studio" course in 2024, aimed at exploring and addressing transnational issues in urban planning.

This course focuses on the renewal and planning of some of Tokyo's old communities, challenging students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems. These communities face numerous issues due to long-term development and natural aging, such as aging infrastructure, deteriorating living environments, and loss of community vitality. Students are expected to propose sustainable and forward-thinking solutions through innovative thinking.

The Importance of Transnational Academic Exchange

Under this cooperative model, students from Tamkang University and Tokyo Denki University have the opportunity to deeply interact and collaborate, jointly researching similar problems and challenges in urban planning. This cross-cultural academic exchange not only expands students' international horizons but also deepens their understanding and respect for urban diversity.

Field Surveys and Data Analysis

Guided by their instructors, students conducted field surveys and collected relevant data to analyze the current status of Tokyo’s old communities. Through interviews with community residents, assessments of infrastructure, and observations of community activities, students were able to gain a comprehensive understanding of the actual needs and challenges of the communities.

Innovative Design and Planning Proposals

Based on the results of surveys and analyses, students proposed various innovative design solutions. These proposals not only considered the sustainable development of the community but also focused on preserving the unique cultural identity of the community. For instance, some design proposals emphasized the concept of green buildings, using advanced technology and materials to improve living conditions while reducing environmental impact.

Academic and Professional Growth

Through this course, students not only enhanced their professional skills, such as urban planning, architectural design, and environmental analysis, but also improved their abilities in teamwork and cross-cultural communication. This will undoubtedly be a great asset to them in a globalized working environment in the future.

Conclusion

"International Joint Studio" is not just an academic course; it is a platform that allows students to be actively involved in the entire process of urban planning, from identifying problems to designing solutions and proposing resolutions. This practical experience is invaluable for their future careers. The innovative collaboration model between Tamkang University and Tokyo Denki University has cultivated a new generation of professionals with international perspectives and professional skills in the field of urban planning. It is hoped that this model will inspire more institutions of higher education to explore similar transnational educational collaborations, to foster global academic exchanges and professional development.
