The Department of Architecture at Tamkang University was established in the 53rd year of the Republic of China. The master's program was founded in the 70th year of the Republic of China, and the doctoral program was initiated in the 93rd year of the Republic of China as part of the Department of Civil Engineering's doctoral program with a focus on architecture.
The Department of Architecture is one of the few departments at Tamkang University with its own building. The department building is located at the northwest corner of the university campus and is a renovated wing of the old Engineering Building. During the summer vacation of the 82nd year of the Republic of China, faculty and students from the department worked together to design and create construction drawings. The building was completed at the beginning of the 83rd year of the Republic of China and became operational. The completion of the new building, along with the planning of new courses and the hiring of new faculty members, marked a new chapter for the Department of Architecture at Tamkang University.
Since its establishment, the department has produced a significant number of alumni: approximately 3,000 from the bachelor's program, around 480 from the master's program, and over 3,000 licensed architects. With the trend of globalization, nearly a hundred alumni are now playing important roles in major architectural firms worldwide.
The master's program is currently divided into two groups: the Architecture and Urban Design Group and the Urban Architecture and Sustainable Environment Group. Being located in the Taipei metropolitan area, Tamkang University has the opportunity to participate in the mechanisms driving urban and architectural development in Taiwan. Faced with the rapidly growing construction industry, we have formulated two research directions for teaching and research, integrating the primary research areas of our full-time faculty members.
1.Enhancing our ongoing research and practical capabilities in digital architecture. Building upon the achievements we have already accumulated, we aim to stay attuned to the pulse of technology, maintaining the ability to stay in sync with the world while further expanding our integration of cross-disciplinary digital applications.
2.Focusing on urban and architectural design with sustainability, ecology, and society at its core. In response to the "urban age" trend and the compact spatial culture issues prevalent in Asian metropolitan areas, such as aging populations, cultural diversity, and high population density, we engage in cross-city studies of urban and architectural morphology. We pay special attention to Taiwan's unique urban-rural dynamics, conducting ecological and sustainable design practices and theoretical development for various residential contexts.
