Tamkang University's Second Year Architecture Students' Social Responsibility Workshop Report: Exploring "Jack's Ocean Adventure"

This summer, the second-year architecture students of Tamkang University launched a vibrant and creative social responsibility workshop at Yuming National Primary and Middle School in Yilan County. Titled "Jack's Ocean Adventure – Creating Opportunities for Community Learning Together," this workshop was not just an academic endeavor but a perfect combination of professional knowledge and service spirit, all wrapped up in a practical party.

A Creativity-Filled Learning Adventure

Fueled by creativity and imagination, this workshop guided students to explore how to transform the campus and community into a dynamic space for learning and interaction. Students were invited to dive deep into interpersonal relationships, observe their living environment, and design initiatives that would advance together with the community residents.

Architecture, More Than Just Buildings

In this workshop, students learned not only about architecture but also how to make architecture 'speak.' They constructed three structures filled with narrative, each one as if stepping out of a fairy tale:

  1. Sprite Rainbow Bridge: This bridge physically connects the two sides of the ecological lake and symbolically represents the connection between nature and human spirit.
  2. Canopy Sea Waves: Under the school's ancient trees, students created a wavy relaxation space, making one feel as though they are at the intersection of forest and sea.
  3. Ancient Well, Banyan Tree, and Stone Wall: This design draws from the local community culture, combining important water sources, ancient banyan trees, and traditional stone walls of the community’s history, awakening the collective memory and cultural spirit of the community.

Energetic Feedback and Outcomes

These creative structures not only brought a new look to the campus but also allowed students and community residents to experience the power of culture. The students' designs have become new community landmarks and popular spots for learning and interaction.

More importantly, this workshop demonstrated the spirit of University Social Responsibility (USR), where through professional service learning, the students not only enhanced themselves but also enriched community life.

Conclusion

"Jack's Ocean Adventure" workshop proved that learning can be an adventure and education a celebration. With their creativity and enthusiasm, the students of Tamkang University not only transformed a community's landscape but also paved the way for their own futures. This workshop represents a beautiful vision for future urban renewal and community engagement.
