Instead of reading and relaxing, movies, TV series and online games have gradually become the most popular leisure activities for most people in the modern society. Words are not attractive to people anymore, thus, I wanted this public reading area to combine reading with users’ life styles. Connecting reading to other activities, reading is no longer an action of absorbing words unitarily, but an attractive leisure. I divided reading into four types, which are the combination with dialogue, video, recording and single sound receiving, respectively. I then designed four different public reading area for different users.

At the base, I found that people’s walking pace changes due to the external environment. For example, the Yongkong Park near the base is surrounded by lots of greens, making me feel like I’m standing in an invisible shelter which isolates the surroundings. Whenever I walk in to the woods, I want to slow down and enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by trees and the shadow of them. Therefore, I use the lights and the surrounding of trees as the main concept of my design, allowing the users to enjoy trees and the changes of the shadow from different angles and height in my public reading area. To be more specific, users can see different lights and shadow being reflected on the screens when they step on platforms with different height at different time, thus, the users will be able to experience both static tree and dynamic shadow which changes from time to time while reading. Furthermore, the residents, schoolchildren and even tourists might be attracted by the dynamic state of the design through the glass when they pass by, make those who haven’t read for a long while pick up the memories of reading and create another special reading experience.

This building has two floors and is divided into two types of entrances, which are the dynamic entrance directly from the YongKong Park in the west and the static entrance, which is very roundabout, from the residential area in the south. The washroom and a semi-outdoor speech space toward the YongKong Park are at the first floor, and a book car area for the outdoor readers is built right beside the speech space. Not only can the book car attract the people from the park, but it can isolate the noise of cars, ensuring the quality of reading. The second floor serves as the main space of indoor public reading area. The lobby is connected to the video area, the elderly reading club and the children recording area. Compared to other areas, the video area requires a darker environment, so I replaced the walls with trees, preventing the straight sunshine and allowing users to stare at the trees in order to ease the discomfort after the long use of their eyes. The elderly reading club, however, needs a more stable environment for the elderly to be comfortable and at ease while staying there. Therefore, this area is located behind the screen of tree shadow, lowering the chance for them to be affected by the dynamic tree shadow. The concrete steel structure is used at the children recoding area in order to create the easy and dynamic feeling. Because of the height of the children, the ceiling here is lowered gradually, and the lowest part of it is reachable for the children so as to encourage them to record their feelings on the ceiling directly. The glass serves as the paper for children to draw on, and the pass-by can see the children drawing and writing at any time. The children themselves are changing the lines of the elevation when they’re drawing, making the elevation a brand new view every day, Also, the skywalk surrounded by the trees outdoor are connected three resting platforms with different heights, allowing those who pass by to see the changes of the tree shadows and experience the feeling of being surrounded by many kinds of trees through the design of the platform and the transition of the orient.
